The deacons of Dallas Avenue Baptist Church are a ministering body of men. Acts 6 and 1 Timothy 3, respectively, address
the initial calling of deacons and address their qualifications.
The deacons of our fellowship are tasked with a number of various responsibilities, some involving direct ministry to the
church body and some which involve the function and safety of the church. This in no way implies that the deacons serve in a
governing capacity, but rather as a source of commitment, experience and wisdom required and applied to assist the pastor in
ensuring a Biblically-based, accountable and growing New Testament church.
Following is a list and brief explanation of the areas of church ministry and function which the deacons have responsibility
for. While some of these tasks may be unique to deacon ministry, others will lend themselves to church participation which
is necessary and in accordance with God’s design. Serving and ministering should be unique, not only to deacons, but to
every child of God in the church of the Lord Jesus Christ (Galatians 5:13).
THE LORD’S SUPPER
The Lord’s Supper is one of the two ordinances that Jesus required of His Church. This is a special observance in which members of
the Body of Christ, through partaking of the bread and the fruit of the vine, memorialize the death of the Redeemer and anticipate His
glorious second coming. This event is symbolic (not sacramental) in meaning and is a very personal time between the believer and the
Lord, and among those of His church.
The Deacons lead in this ministry in three ways: by maintaining adequate supplies for the Supper; by preparing the serving table in the sanctuary; and by serving the bread and juice to the congregation during the observance. The Lord’s Supper at Dallas Avenue Baptist
Church currently takes place on the last Sunday evening of each month.
BAPTISM
Baptism is the other of the two ordinances of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is an act of obedience symbolizing the believer’s faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Savior, the believer’s death to sin, the burial of the old life, and the resurrection to walk in newness of life in Christ Jesus. It is a prerequisite to Church membership and to the Lord’s Supper, but not to salvation.
The deacons of the church lead in this ordinance through ensuring that the Baptistery is prepared for baptismal services and by
assisting the pastor and candidates with baptism details. Where female candidates are involved, deacon’s wives or other ladies assist.
SECURITY
The Security Ministry of Dallas Avenue Baptist Church is intended and designed to provide a reasonable level of security to the
premises of church grounds and facilities. This includes patrolling all areas exterior and interior, specifically during times of church
functions when they are occupied. This will help to both ensure the safety of all present and to prevent injury or property loss.
Security measures are concentrated strongly on the nursery and children’s department where control of access is monitored closely
while children are in the care of the church.
NURSING HOME AND HOMEBOUND MINISTRIES
The mission of the nursing home and homebound ministries at Dallas Avenue Baptist Church is to bring the Gospel to those members
who are confined to special care facilities or to their own or other homes due to age, health or disabilities. This ministry also includes
the watch care of those in these conditions who are members of the church; through visits, prayers and sharing in special moments
of their lives such as birthdays and other occasions. They are also kept informed of church activities and changes through personal
contacts as well as through the church newsletter and calender provided to them.
New additions to this realm of our ministry are welcomed and encouraged as we do not want anyone in need to be overlooked or
neglected.
BENEVOLENCE MINISTRY
The Deacons provide leadership and coordination for the benevolence ministry of the Dallas Avenue Baptist Church. It is designed
for people who have material/sustenance needs and who may or may not be members of the Church, including those who are local as
well as transients. Assistance is available in various forms, is limited in both frequency and amount and is tailored and channeled to
address urgent, short-term needs which come in various forms. This ministry has established guidelines addressing eligibility and
accountability and is carried out in the spirit of Matthew 25:40, where we believe Christ at His word that in providing for “unto one of
the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” We try to respond in an efficient and timely manner upon learning of those
in need, so please keep us informed if any come to your attention.
THE FOOD BANK
The primary purpose of the Food Bank is to provide assistance to members of the church who have a legitimate need for food due to
limited resources and/or extenuating circumstances. Others outside of the church may also be eligible for assistance. All needs will be
confirmed and verifiable in order to insure proper stewardship and accountability, and disbursements should be accompanied with the
knowledge and approval of a deacon and/or the pastor.
The food will normally be provided by the church body through monthly food drives and it will be distributed through the Care
Groups of the church. This ministry will have a special emphasis during the Christmas season when plans are to provide those in need
with food items to help make their celebration a more meaningful and festive one.
We want no genuine need to go unattended, so the deacons ask that you bring them to our attention at anytime so that this ministry
can serve the purpose that the Lord intends for it.
MONEY COUNTING
While the deacons of Dallas Avenue Baptist Church are not a governing body, they are tasked with certain duties of a critical and
sensitive nature requiring a high level of trust and dependability. Money counting is one such area, and consists chiefly of two
deacons each Sunday providing an initial count and bank deposit of collected monies for the morning and evening worship services.
This also serves to augment the work that the Counting Committee does on the following Monday. Having a two tier procedure for
counting monies provides a more consistent, secure and accountable system of stewardship with the funds God has entrusted to His
church.
WIDOWS
From Acts chapter 6, we know that one of the ministries in the early church which was being neglected was that of caring for
widows. This was a major need which lead to the choosing of the seven men, which we believe was the original beginning of the
New Testament church deacon ministry. Even though there may be other church programs which widows can be included in, the
Biblical model reminds us specifically of the importance of these ladies and ensuring that they are covered under the umbrella of
deacon ministry.
The deacons of Dallas Avenue Baptist Church provide a watch care ministry for the widows of our fellowship, where we maintain an
awareness of their welfare and needs and ensure that they are addressed. This not only compliments some of the other avenues of
support and love for the widows of the church, but when necessary it can also provide an additional level of service whereby
practical needs are done or arranged for them in a timely manner.
